Still remember this photo? Yes! The poster competition! I took part in the poster competition last week and it make me super disappointed.
My purpose of this poster is to tell the reader of my poster about the impact of the share price on the share repurchase by the firms in Malaysia. So, to make it more "attractive" and "interesting" and "creative" (what I feel this to be attractive, interesting and creative but I'm not sure whether others will feel the same as me or not. ), I used the concept of candlestick to represent the stock price changes when I putting it all my information in my poster.
If you study about the candlestick, you will notice a red or green/blue stick which Japanese used it to determine the stock closing price, opening price, high or low price of the day (I'm not going to explain it as it can be found in the Internet. Just Google it! LOL). I also used the image of the stock price for Tenaga as my background image and also money staircase as I feel it is more related than using unnecessary image and colours which is not so suitable.
So, happily, I print out the poster and paste it on my faculty's wall. There was no more space for the board to put on my poster as there were more than 60 plus students involved in this competition. But I didn't complain anything as I think it was my fault for not register earlier and that's consider a punishment for me (this is what I think) to put it on the wall. Since it was too early when I paste my poster on it (about 11am like that), then me and my friends decided to had a lunch outside the campus and go library until 2pm as they would started to evaluate.
About 1.30pm, me and my friends went back and prepared to be "asked" (evaluate) by the lecturer. each of the participant will ONLY evaluate by ONE lecturer randomly. Thinking that the lecturer who will evaluate us will be late, we patiently wait until 5pm when all of my friends was asked and evaluated and left two of us not yet evaluated, we decided to ask the organizer.
The organizer, with frustration, asked another lecturer came out from the room and evaluate us. When the lecturer came, she just told us that she got our marks for this poster already. WHAT? How come we can't see him/her that time during the evaluation? We had not left the place at all and we were there earlier also. So, to make us "happy", she just asked us to tell what we did and explain about it and she said she WOULD NOT GOING TO ASK ANY QUESTION on the poster. So, we just explained.
Few days later after the competition and during the dinner night, the results of the poster competition was announced and I didn't get Gold award. Ok! I'm quite disappointed lar! Then I'm aiming for Silver which was not announced on that day. I waited until today and my supervisor had just told us that we just got a Bronze (which is the worst). WHAT? AM I JUST DESERVE THE BRONZE? I can't see any creativity on any of the silver's winners!!! I'm serious.
I'm confident with what I did and never regret on what I had done. I'm happy with the poster that I had done, and yet I believed it to be the best of the best.
Poster, is a way of how you present your message by using visual but not only WORDS. It is a way to present your creativity and get attention. If only the WORDS are important, then why not just using the simple A4 paper of A1 paper and print out the finding by using WORDS ONLY which will help the students to save the money and time?
I know, what I said and think will not affecting the results of the competition any more (as you will said: JUDGES DECISION IS FINAL), but I really hope that in future, please invite more lecturers to evaluate for any competition to avoid any biases so as to improve the quality of the students.
P/s: You might not agree with what I said, but that's just my opinion and feel.
Thanks for reading this post.
